See the service areaFamily photos, videos and files spread across old computers, external drives and USB sticks, and one failed drive away from being lost? We set up a home NAS, back up each computer and phone to it on a schedule, and actually restore some files to prove the backup works. We can also copy what is on old drives onto a new drive or the NAS. You can buy the equipment yourself, or we buy it at cost with the receipt once you approve. We access only the data the job needs and keep no copies.
The work this service usually covers. The exact scope is set out in the written quote after an on-site assessment.
Advice on capacity and drive layout for how much you have and how your family uses it. Setup of common brands such as Synology and QNAP: drives, the admin account and system updates.
Mac and Windows computers backed up to the NAS on a schedule, and phone photos and videos backed up home through the NAS app. Timing and how many older versions to keep are set to suit you.
Once it is set up, we restore a few files to prove the backup works and show you how to do it yourself. Email alerts if a drive has problems or a backup fails.
Files from old computers, external drives, USB sticks and memory cards copied to a new drive or the NAS, then checked with you. The old drive is left as it was. Adapters and new drives at cost, only with your approval.
A NAS can fail too, so we suggest keeping your most important files in one more place as well, on an external drive or a cloud backup. We advise on what fits and set it up.
Separate accounts and shared folders for family members. Access from outside the home is turned on only if you want it, with a strong password and two-step verification.
Nothing starts until you approve the quote, and parts or equipment are bought only with your OK.
Roughly how much data, which computers and phones to back up, how many old drives, and whether you already have a NAS. Farther areas: please book in advance.
We look at your devices, whether the old drives read normally and your home network, suggest a NAS and drive setup, and give you a written quote. Equipment is bought by you, or by us at cost once you approve.
Once you approve: the NAS installed, old drives copied, backups scheduled, then a test restore. With a lot of data, we estimate the copy time first and plan it with you.
We check the copied files with you and show you how to find and restore files. The invoice itemizes labor, the trip charge, pass-through costs and equipment receipts.
Enter an address or ZIP code and choose the service to see a rough range. Tolls, the congestion toll and parking are extra at actual cost; the final figure is the written quote after an on-site assessment.
Common questions about cost, scheduling and scope.
A NAS sits in your home, the data stays under your control, and the space depends on the drives in it. Cloud storage sits with a provider, is handy when you are out, and is paid monthly by capacity. Many families use both: everything on the NAS, and one more copy of what matters most in the cloud or on an external drive. We advise based on how much you have and how you use it, and you decide.
Drives that read normally we copy directly. A drive that no longer reads, makes noises, was dropped or got wet is a data recovery job; see Data recovery. Physically damaged drives are not opened on site. If a drive starts reading unreliably during the copy, we stop and talk to you rather than keep forcing it.
We access only the data needed for the copy and the backups, and we ask before opening any file to check it. You set and type the NAS admin password and your account passwords yourself. Copying goes straight from the old drive to your new drive or NAS, and we keep no copies.
Copy speed depends on how much data there is and the state of the old drive; several hundred GB or more can take hours. If the NAS and drives are chosen in advance (bought by you, or by us at cost once you approve), the setup and backups can usually be done in one visit. For very large amounts, we estimate the time first and plan it with you, for example setting up other things while the copy runs.
The trip charge is based on round-trip mileage on the Google Maps fastest route. Labor is billed by actual time, with a 1-hour minimum per visit and 15-minute increments after that. Tolls, the Manhattan congestion toll and parking are passed through at actual cost with no markup and itemized; parts are at cost with the receipt and bought only with your approval. You get a written quote after an on-site assessment. See the Pricing page for details.
