Overview

Computer won’t start, getting slower every week, or full of pop-ups you can’t close? Fan roaring and the case running hot? Or would you like an older machine to feel quick again with an SSD and more memory? We come to you, find the cause, explain it in plain words and give you a written quote, and nothing starts until you agree. Before any reinstall or drive swap, we confirm which files you need and back them up first.

Who it is for

  • Family laptops and desktops, including the kids’ school computers
  • People who work from home or run a business from their computer
  • Work computers in small offices, clinics, accounting firms and shops
  • Older parents who need someone patient to come over and explain
  • Anyone who would rather give an older computer a few more years

What we do

The work this service usually covers. The exact scope is set out in the written quote after an on-site assessment.

  1. Diagnosis and repair

Won’t start, black or blue screens, freezing or no internet: we work out whether it’s software or hardware. If a part such as a laptop screen needs replacing, we explain before we fix it.

  2. Slow, viruses and pop-ups

Viruses, malware and adware removed, startup items cleaned up, browser settings and system updates checked.

  3. SSD and memory upgrades

An old hard drive swapped for an SSD with your system and files carried over, and more memory where it helps. We check the model can be upgraded first; parts at cost with the receipt, bought only with your approval.

  4. OS reinstall

Your files backed up first, then macOS or Windows reinstalled with drivers, everyday apps, Chinese input and updates turned on.

  5. Internal cleaning and dust removal

A loud fan, a hot case or sudden shutdowns are often dust blocking the cooling. We open the case and clean the fans, heat sinks and vents. New thermal paste or a fan only with your approval.

  6. New computers, printers and Wi-Fi

Moving to a new computer, a printer that won’t connect or weak home Wi-Fi can be handled on the same visit. See New device setup & data transfer, Printer setup & troubleshooting and Home network & Wi-Fi.

How it works

Nothing starts until you approve the quote, and parts or equipment are bought only with your OK.

  1. Tell us what’s wrong

Call, message us on WeChat or use the form with the model and the symptoms; a photo of any error message helps. Farther areas: please book in advance.

  2. On-site check and written quote

We find the cause on site, explain the options and give you a written quote. Time spent diagnosing counts as labor.

  3. Work starts when you approve

Nothing starts until you agree. Parts are confirmed and bought only with your approval, and any extra time is discussed first.

  4. Tested, explained, itemized

We test with you and explain what was done and what to watch for. The invoice itemizes labor, the trip charge, pass-through costs and parts receipts.

Questions

Common questions about cost, scheduling and scope.

Will I lose my files?

Before a reinstall or a drive replacement, we confirm with you which files to keep and back them up to your external drive or the new drive before we start; a new drive is at cost and bought only with your approval. We also suggest keeping your own regular backups, so important files never exist in just one place. If the drive itself has failed and the files can’t be read, see Data recovery.

Is an SSD, more memory or a cleaning worth it on an older computer?

We’ll tell you honestly. Many computers a few years old often start up and run noticeably smoother after an SSD, more memory and a cleaning, and the fan may get quieter. But if the repair and parts come close to the cost of a new computer, or the machine can no longer run the software you need, we say so and you decide. Some newer Macs and thin laptops have storage and memory soldered to the board and can’t be upgraded, and some models are hard to open for cleaning, so we check the exact model before advising. If you decide to replace it, we can help you choose one, set it up and move your files over.

Can it be fixed in one visit?

Software problems can usually be handled during the visit. For upgrades where the part is known in advance, such as an SSD or memory, we confirm the model and cost first, buy it once you approve and do the job in one visit. If the missing part only shows up during the check, it has to be ordered and fitted on a second visit. Each visit has its own trip charge and labor, so we try to pin the problem down the first time and save you extra trips.

Can you come in the evening or on a weekend?

Yes, by appointment, depending on the day’s schedule. Saturday daytime is a normal day. In the evening (6 pm to 9 am), on Sundays and on holidays, labor is billed at 1.5 times; the trip charge and pass-through costs don’t change. Farther areas: please book in advance.

How is the cost worked out?

The trip charge is based on round-trip mileage on the Google Maps fastest route. Labor is billed by actual time, with a 1-hour minimum per visit and 15-minute increments after that. Tolls, the Manhattan congestion toll and parking are passed through at actual cost with no markup and itemized; parts are at cost with the receipt and bought only with your approval. You get a written quote after an on-site assessment. See the Pricing page for details.
